Identifying Parts of an Arrow

Arrow - Identifying Parts

Nocks - Arrow nocks are not to be confused with string nocks. A string nock is something that is tied or crimped to the bow string to give you a place to orientate your arrow nock to. Arrow nocks come in a variety of colors and several different types. The two most common types are the glue on nocks for wood and some aluminum arrows. Push in nocks are used for more and more aluminum arrows and most carbon arrows. Glue on nocks can be applied easily with cement like Duco but they have to aligned properly at that time. One big advantage of the push in style nock is that it can be rotated to allow you to better align the fletching to the bow or rest. Most carbon arrow shafts include the nocks but specific colors will need to be purchased separately.

Fletching - Fletching in simple terms is the vane or feather that steers the arrow. They come in almost any color imaginable and range in length from 1.5" to 5.5". They can be applied straight. offset of helical. Please see the "Arrow Fletching" guide for more in depth information about this subject.

Shaft - The arrow shaft is the main body of the arrow. The main two considerations when choosing a arrow shaft is to consider the "Spine" and "Weight " of the arrow. Both of these subjects are covered individually in other "Archery Tips" documents.

Inserts - Inserts are typically a piece of aluminum with threads on the inside that is glued to the inside of the arrow. This allows the archer to screw in different type of points and switch them out easily. Some inserts are make as one piece with the point. These are generally for target archers who desire lighter points and are not concerned about the ability to switch out the points.

Points - Points come in a variety of shapes and weights. Points can be for field and target use or broadheads for hunting. There three major types as described below...

"Glue-on" points used for traditional archery. They can be used with traditional wood arrows or with carbon and aluminum by using special adapters.

"Screw-in" points are points that screw into an insert and are the most common because of their versatility. You can easily switch the style of  point by simply unscrewing it.

"Glue-in" points are points that replace the inserts and are used primarily by target archers. These are glued directly into the shaft of an arrow.
